Camcorder backpack attitude problem

Buying a backpack for a professional camcorder for use on a film making expedition can be confusing - or maybe I just have an attitude problem

There are quite a few good brands of backpacks out there - ‘Kata’ springs to mind, although there are others, but I opted for the Lowepro ‘Nature Trekker.’

This created a (fairly) interesting problem because it was and still is available in green or black. A ‘forest’ green, or deep green, but whichever way you look at it it’s still green. This was the problem, because to my mind, green is too obvious, a green backpack is obviously designed for the Great Outdoors, and anyone who is carrying a green backpack is obviously an outdoorsy kind of person, the kind that likes to communicates with nature and who doesn’t object to the world knowing that he’s this kind of person.
Maybe he believes that a green backpack gives him a certain credibility: ‘hey, I’m a ‘green’, I care about the environment. Check out my green backpack if you don’t believe me.’
It should be pretty obvious by now that I decided on a black backpack. Black - what a great colour! And what makes it so great, apart from the fact that it doesn’t stereotype you as a nature lover, is that you can take it absolutely anywhere.
Let’s face it, the world doesn’t just consist of green fields, green trees and green people. There is other life out there, and this other life mostly (or completely if you’re a city-dweller) consists of dirty streets, dirty buildings and dirty seats, if you use any kind of public transportation.
Black will blend perfectly into these surroundings! With black, you can safely put down your rucksack secure in the knowledge that when you pick it up again it will just be a little blacker - it won’t be green with a black dirt stain on it!
So will this backpack be o.k for carrying a professional camcorder?
I have no idea. I haven’t opened it yet. To be honest, I’m a little afraid to open it. It will probably have lots of compartments - lots of small compartments, small compartments which were designed for an SLR camera or two, plus a few lenses, rather than for a big single compartment for a pretty big camcorder. Adjustments will have to be made, and I don’t like adjusting.
In a future post I’ll actually open the backpack and try to pack a pretty big old-fashioned VHS video camera into it. If I can pack a dinosaur like this into it I can sure pack one of its sub-species - a modern pro camcorder, into it.
I think.
