Northland New Zealand backpacking guide
The far north of New Zealand is full of sandy beaches, great surf and fishing and loads of New Zealand history.
One of Northlands most distinguishing features is 90 Mile Beach where sand can be seen as far as the eye can see. If you have your own vehicle you can drive along it yourself (it is a legal road!) otherwise there are tours for backpackers that go via the beach, which also gives the option of boogie-boarding down the huge sand dunes.
Activities
Northland hosts some of the most beautiful beaches in New Zealand and is a popular holiday destination for backpackers in the summer time. There are plenty of tour operators, particularly in the Bay of Islands that provide water based activities such as cruises, jet boating, sailing, sea kayaking, swimming with dolphins, scuba diving and fishing. Most hostels in the area will have information about the local companies, and tourist information centres are located in most towns will help backpackers with information. Paihia is the main town in the Bay of islands because of it’s central proximity to all the islands.
Cape Reinga is the northern most point in New Zealand, and is worth a backpacking to. From here you can see where the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea meet (a very spiritual place for the indigenous Maori people). Waipoua Kauri Forest is the only remaining forest of its kind. The Kauri tree is native to New Zealand and is now protected. Extensive Kauri forests like this one once covered the Upper North Island. Some of the Kauri trees in the Waipoua Forest are over 2000 years old and 60 metres high.
Employment
Kerikeri is one of the most popular destinations for backpackers and fruit pickers to head to over the summer months. There are loads of orchards along the road and it is easy to establish contacts to pick up fruit picking work.
Entertainment
You can visit the Pioneer Village in Kaikohe, which is a reconstruction of how the town used to look when it was first being settled. It features a school, jail, courthouse, general store as well as artifacts from its past. The town of Kaikohe has a lot of history relating to the Maori Land Wars and still has a strong Maori influence.
